Please note that during the month of February we will be running most of our tours in multiple languages for the Chinese New Year holiday period. If you would like to book a tour during February and there is no availability on this page, please book here: http://tekapostargazing.co.nz/english-mandarin-speaking/
Please note this later tour is not suitable for children under 13 years old and is not recommended for families with multiple children due to the late end time. If your child or children are under 13, please book our earlier multilingual tour and specify upon booking whether you prefer to have the tour in English or in Mandarin. This tour can be booked here: http://tekapostargazing.co.nz/english-mandarin-speaking/
In the summer season our tours must run quite late to account for late sunset times. Please be aware that if you are booking a tour during December or January, your tour time may be in the early morning (after 12am). If this is the case please ensure you are booking for the correct day, e.g. if you would like to book for the evening of December 3rd your tour start time and date will show as the next day, 12.15am on December 4th.
This Tekapo Star Gazing tour includes 45 minute of guided astronomy and story telling about the main features of the southern night sky. We will enlighten, inspire and fascinate you with what the night sky means for Maori, European, and other cultures from a mythological and navigational perspective. This tour will either operate outdoors using both the naked eye as well as three high-powered telescopes to get you up close and personal with the planets, galaxies and stars that are most prominent at the particular time of the year you are doing the tour, OR, we will give an exciting indoor guided tour using our large high definition projector screen with amazing full-colour astrophotography and video. Similar tour content will be delivered whether the tour is outdoors or indoors.
Night sky visibility will determine whether the guided portion of the tour is conducted outside or inside. Tours will operate outside with a partially cloudy sky if we can still see some stars. If the sky is completely covered with cloud, we will move to the indoor guided tour.
Once the formal 45 minute guided story telling part of the tour is done, we then invite you into the hot pools for 45 minutes where the lighting will be turned down, beautiful relaxing music will be played, and you can lie back on our floating hammocks and relax. Guides will also be present around the pools to answer any questions and tell more stories about the beautiful night skies.
The tour will end after an approx 45 minute soak in the pools. Tour times allow for a 10 minute change of clothing before and after your hot pool experience. Customers will be notified when the tour is finishing and be asked to vacate the hot pools to get changed. Courtesy vans will depart after the tour has finished.
Please remember to bring your swimwear and a towel.
